My relationship with literature has I think been an
interesting one—at one time I wrote lots of poetry and different short stories.
Though since I’ve gotten married to a librarian (and all my in-laws are
librarians) I think my relationship with books and literature has certainly
taken a different turn. But in my past I was always attracted to literature
that was against the grain or things other people just were not reading. Either
because for some people it was “too long” like Treasure Island or some people
at some point deemed it subversive like “Fahrenheit 451”. I would read Poe stories or Stephen King. I
had read ‘A Rose For Emily’ as a part
of a collection of short stories long before I came here to Kennesaw State. I
suppose in literature I’ve either had a taste for things that were “gothic” or
were going to get you talking.
Unfortunately, I can’t remember much of school and
literature. I remember not liking a lot of assignments because they just seemed
to be boring. At least in Middle School there were boring. I wrote poetry and stories on my own. I didn’t
like having to do it because someone told me to. High School brought some relief with the venture
into World Literature, American Literature, and then British Literature. One
thing I remember specifically about Senior British Literature was we were
studying the time period that involved ‘The
Canterbury Tales’ and we each had to write a story that was in the same
kind of vain. Basically a morality tale or play told by someone else or from
the point of view of someone else. Well—as usual—being the person to read or
write things that bucked the status quo I wrote about a female knight who went
around performing good deeds who was eventually highly honored and rewarded. My
instructor was very impressed and suggested I should seek out a publisher to
have it publisher. I never did but that made me feel very good.
I don’t write very much now as I don’t simply have the time
but I do try to still write poetry now and again. I recently submitted to a
literary magazine and even though I was turned down I hope I’ll find another
magazine and can be published that way.
I am glad to know that I wasn't the only one who didn't enjoy reading (literature) that much. Look at you though! Publishing your work? You should be very proud of yourself. I do quite often read your papers and enjoy doing so, mostly because of the easy flow. Good job!
ReplyDeleteI am glad that you enjoy reading! Also, I think that is important that teachers expose students to literature in order for them to enjoy reading as a past time. You should publish your work if your instructor thought you should!
ReplyDeleteSeems as though you have the "writing gift". That is a hard one to acquire. I truly wish I was a better writer. Good for you on the accolade from your teacher telling you that you should get your work published. Without knowing much about the print world, I'm sure it's easier said than done. Either way, keep up the good work and don't ever stop dreaming. If writing is what you ultimately want to do, go for it! Best of luck!
ReplyDeleteI am not surprised that i was one many who did not appreciate reading in high school. But know that someone so young is already having her work published is very impressive. Like Isadora, i also find great joy in reading your post because i know i am gonna read a top notch paper. Keep up the great work.
ReplyDeleteWonderful!! I was never a good writer. Maybe it was self-esteem, but mostly it was due to a lack of complete effort. I hated to write, and I still can't believe I've written 4 blogs! Yet, with all you say, you write 1000 times better than I do and I enjoy reading you work! Oh, and yes, "The Canterbury Tales" was not an enjoyable reading experience for me. I think I had to also write a tale and instead, I took a zero on that assignment by not doing it at all...
ReplyDeleteThe weirder the book, the better it is. I have a similar taste for odd books for example Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (weird, but great). I like how you did not necessarily enjoy the assignments in school but you did enjoy the actual subject which a lot of teachers and parents just do not understand! Thanks for sharing!
